Professional Biography
Jennifer Elwell is an agriculture and communications specialist with the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, where she graduated with degrees in Animal Sciences and Agricultural Communications in 1997.
Jennifer grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. While horses were always a part of her life, Jennifer watched as her parents transformed a small, run-down farm into a thriving horse boarding and riding instruction business. Jennifer and her sisters became involved in the 4-H Horse Program early in the family journey, and that eventually led Jennifer to study agriculture at UK.
Jennifer has worked in agriculture for 27 years. The first 17 years were spent as the communications and education director for the Kentucky Corn and Small Grain Growers Associations, as well as maintaining a contract communication, website, and graphic design services business.
In 2014, Jennifer was hired as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom. Through her consulting company, Farm Scholar, Jennifer helped grow in-school and outreach agriculture education programs by collaborating with Kentucky's farm organizations. She developed a comprehensive library of Kentucky-specific curriculum and teaching resources, grew the network of agriculture educators across the Commonwealth, and led many agriculture literacy workshops. In 2022, she also began administering the Kentucky Agricultural Council, broadening her scope of influence. Her last major project in this capacity was assisting with the development of the Strategic Roadmap for Kentucky Agriculture: 2025-2030.
The recent move to the University of Kentucky reflects her passion for contributing to the institution that helped shape her career path.
